光柵式傳感器利用光柵形成的莫爾條紋把角位移轉(zhuǎn)換成光電信號（圖2）。光柵有兩塊，一為固定光柵，另一為裝在表盤軸上的移動光柵。加在承重臺上的被測物通過傳力杠桿系統(tǒng)使表盤軸旋轉(zhuǎn)，帶動移動光柵轉(zhuǎn)動，使莫爾條紋也隨之移動。利用光電管、轉(zhuǎn)換電路和顯示儀表，即可計(jì)算出移過的莫爾條紋數(shù)量，測出光柵轉(zhuǎn)動角的大小，從而確定和讀出被測物質(zhì)量。
